I'm looking for some tablature to "Rings". Its one of the few Kottke songs that I haven't been able to find anywhere. Does anyone out there know where I could find it? If not, does anyone know at least what tuning he uses for this song? Thanks a million.

I was inspired to learn to play guitar after hearing Leo, and then John Fahey, in the late 70's. I've been playing since then, usually by myself. My cats moved away when I was learning slide, but since have moved back.

I'm still learning, as I hope y'all are too- if you would like to talk about tunings, songs, or musical inspiration, send me an e-mail.

I hope Leo Kotke will be back in the New England area constantly through the years - he is awesome! I've never heard such beautiful sounds eminating from the 6 and 12-string guitar before. His artistry is that of a pioneer in his field. Thank God for the Leo Kotke's of this world; I first heard him in Newburyport, MA, this past fall - I now own 6 CD's. Take care, Leo. Sue

I saw Leo some old "ware" in Pennsylvania last week.He has grown from a armadillo (1st. record cover 6 & 12 string ) to a glyptodont ( today ). {as in, his music is bigger and more powerful than ever} The Kottke-ism's, the fingers flying the fret board, the toe in the worn tennis shoe tapping, the fortune of being there. !
I did a presentation at my community college music class (I'm 42) about Leo,( played 2 of his recordings) the kids dug it more than 20 year old "Mindy's" Brittany Spears, presentation. Joe Pass , Marky Mark , Carlos Montoya , L.L. Cool J ; talk about your diversity.... anyway "Ojo"
and "Busted Bicycle" go very well and simple with gently falling snow and it is November and "accordion bells" is a warming christmas type melody
Leo ..thank you for bringing joy and depth to my life..! not a dinosaur!

My wife and I just saw Leo Kottke here in the Poudre Canyon outside Fort Collins (Mishawaka Amphitheatre). What a setting. River, mountains, mountain goats on the hillside! I have to say that several tunes brought tears to my eyes. WOW! I bought Greenhouse when in college (30 years ago -- OUCH!). No needle in the turntable, so I couldn't listen prior to concert. Bought a CD on the way home, and need to start catching up. He's got to be the finest guitarist I've seen/heard.

I discovered Mr. Kottke by pure accident, and since have been engaged in an effort to educate myself in 'things Kottke'. I have been playing flat-pick guitar off and on for several years, and the first time I heard 6 & 12 string guitar I finally realized what the guitar is supposed to sound like. I am now in the process of looking for the rest of Mr. Kottke's albums, and have begun to look for a 12-string guitar. I saw him in concert last month here in Reno, and was sad to see it end. My wife and I are already eying the piggy bank thinking about a trip to Wisconsin in Nov. to see one of the Kottke/Redbone concerts...

Thanks for sharing your music Mr. Kottke, see you in concert soon ...

I've been a Kottke fanatic since early 1970's. I've heard hundreds of guitarists from all styles and Leo is the unequivical best! I wish he'd make more videos - one day will come too soon when there won't be any more Leo Kottke concerts! If God (or the Devil) offered the chance to play 1/2 as good as Leo in exchange for both legs, I'd sell my shoes! :)

I've had the privilege of listening to Leo Kottke's masterful guitar playing since 1973, when I walked into a Wherehouse music store and heard "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" ("The engineer thought it was 'the ancient joy of man's desire.") I've also been fortunate enough to meet him a few times. It felt like talking with an old friend ... which, in a way, is exactly what it was.

I've heard Leo live in San Luis Obispo back in the 70's and now I see he's due for a return there next month (August '01) Wow!!! Wistful wishes have me on a plane there, but....
Most of all, I'd like to hear the entirety of Circle 'Round the Sun album digitaly remastered and back on the market where it belongs. Or, one of you kind souls might direct me to the "collecter's" venue and I'll take what I can get/pay what I have to. Thanks

hi,

I came upon Leo Kottke by accident. I collect old vinyl records and I came upon an album 6 and 12 String Takoma 1024. I listened to the record and loved the music. So I did a little research. On the back of the album it says Leo Kottke was bong Sept. 11, 1867 so I was somewhat surprised that he is still around. Does anyone have the album and can explain.
I would appreciate it.

Leo got me back in to guitar a couple of years ago and I wouldn't be able to thank him enough. My friends and I took a road trip to Pennsylvania last year to see him play. I had seen him on TV before but this was my first live show. We were all blown away. Becuase of that night I decided to pick up a guitar again after loosing interest for about 10 years. Now I cannot put the dang thing down again.

HI, was wondering if Leo will ever perform in Memphis TN? Seems like memphis is flyover town for his other tours. I am viet-nam era navy vet and was born two months before Leo. Which Navy boot camp did Leo go to? I was in Boot taining in San Diego Jan '63. I work with Navy Enlisted Submarine assignments detailers here. He was a submariner (so I hear) would like to of showed him around this facility maybe even get autograph. Thanks.

First heard Leo when a friend played Machine #2 from the mudlark album in 1971. I was stunned. I immediately knew I'd be spending years trying to learn that clean, staccato technique. His rhythmic influence on all of my playing has made the difference between guitar frustration and guitar magic (for me as a player, not necessarily for those listening ;). Thanks Leo!

PS: I'm working on "Ring, Ring" lately. How can a guitar part be so rhythmic and yet so undulating and fluid at the same time??? This is fun.

I bet I'm the youngest person--and a female at that--to be into Leo Kottke (I'll do an internet "wrong" here and give my age--16)and say that he is one of my favorite musicians. There is something so, so special in his music, and it's not just his style. It's inexplicable, I suppose, but I think Leo Kottke is amazing. This is a great site; I'm visiting here often!

Some friends and I just saw Leo in concert in Batavia, IL. Just plain great. His sound was great, his technique is even smoother, and his chatter is really entertaining as well (I really enjoyed his chat about John Fahey). He just gets better and better. After listening to him since 1975 or so, I finally got his autograph. His new material (I don't know if its out yet or not) has some really tasty stuff, too.

I have just begun looking around this exceptional site and reading back entries and can't wait to get back to it.

I am a long-term Leo fan - 5 Reno, NV concerts under my belt - each better than the last (which was Aug.2000) This was the first concert I can remember, in which he stood throughout.

My introduction was on an old Garrison Keillor show - my first recording a compilation tape, "Leo Kottke: The Best",(late 70's) and he wasn't kidding. If anyone knows where I can find the CD version of that tape, I'd apprediate an email. It is a compilation CD:
"Leo Kottke: The Best" BGO CD277
(My tape is wearing thin!)

Thanks to webmaster Bruce for his work in providing this site.

I just got Leo's anthology and I prit' much nearly fell to the ground upon hearing him play that classical stuff. Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring and the French Suites Bouree. Gosh I'd give my right arm to get him to attempt the Loure from that very same French Suite. How about it ? Where are his relations. Talk to him.Tell him that he should seek to master those. His transcriptions are definitely a comment on modern listening to those pieces. He's got something to say ...Let him say it!

I have seen Leo live twice. He is by far the premier acoustic steel fingerpicking and slide guitarist of the 20th (?and 21st) century. Second place for me belongs to Ry Cooder.

Leo came all the way out to the boonies to play at our folk festival. He wowed us. His arms are kinda ripplely and he told us that he took his car apart once. He is really kinda tall and is definitely your all american boy. But he's a nice man that just wants to have a nice nap then well rested plunk away with a fierceness hitherunto unknown to any one of us up here in the sticks. I am in quam gloriosam in the face of it all.

I've contributed my nostalgic comments to the Little Feat website, and I must say that it is also heart-warming to know that Leo Kottke has an avid following after all these years. I first heard 'Leo Kottke on 6 & 12 string guitar' on a particularly hashishin day early in 1973.I saw him perform, opening for Jesse Colin Young,on another particularly hashishin day in the fall of 1974.His performance was ethereal! Leo has been a part of my life for 25 yrs. now, I first heard him on Aug. 17, 1975. Believe it or not, the next day I was going to a Linda Ronstadt concert in Holmdel, NJ. Guess who the opening act was? What are the odds of that, being astonished on Sunday, and then totally blown away the next day with a live performance!! What a great way to reminisce about my first Leo experience!
I had the privilage of meeting him on June 21, 1986 behind the Beacon Theatre in NYC on his way back from dinner. He was so modest that he was actually somewhat embarassed that someone would actually wait by the back stage entrance to meet him.
Notice how I can remember the exact dates, that is how you experience Leo!

I was at the Mystic on Saturday night, too...magic night, wasn't it? First time I had heard Accordion Bells.

And nobody does Corinna, Corinna like Leo.

Got to see him last year at the Sausalito Art Festival - people walking in front of him, yakking, poor accoustics, windy. But I sat almost at his feet, and it was Leo magic.

I have exposed my 14 year old son to your music. I like to think that this a very good thing considering what is out there. His first question after listening to no vocals cd was, can I get a guitar for my birthday. This was 2 months ago and while just learning on his own he has a great disire to play much like yourself. I told him that he a long road ahead of him but we'll travel it together. I first started playing some 26 years ago with many time outs in between. I have since picked up my 12 string with a new found yearning to play again and now I will be able to do it with my son. I will (WE) be atending a couple of your upcoming concerts before the end of the year. Good Luck and travel safe!

I have heared Leo round about 1980 first and the second 1999 in Hamburg in the "Fabrik". A women which sits next to me in that concert asked her man, before the concert started . "Is he also a singer". Her man answered "I don't now". I gave her the answer that he do, and that his voice is very good, in my opinion.
Some titles later she said to me "realy his voice is very very good, calm strong and dark".
The sound of the concert was the best I ever heared.

I'm now very happy that I have found your Leo site:
I was a long thime on search of same tabs, which I now have found.
The design of your site is also very pretty.

terrific web site and very informative. I started listening to leo in about 1978 when a guitar teacher turned me on to leo's album "my feet are smiling"- which is still my favorite along with "greenhouse". None of the tab i have seen though has helped me figure out the few quick riffs at the beginning portions of "hear the wind howl" that leo does near the 12th fret. I have the rockplast video of him which gives some clues. Any good ears out there that could help? Not only is leo a great guitar player, he's a great entertainer. I don't miss a single show in atlanta. wish i could find leo's first two vinyl records...

Saw Leo in Flagstaff, AZ on April 26. In the local Econo Lodge I picked up a business card that says "Pamela Brown, Front Office Supervisor." Wow! I wanted to talk to Leo and tell him I'd found where Pamela has settled down. Unfortunately, due to a rather lengthly (but good) opening act, I think Leo shortened the show a bit. He didn't play "Pamela" or "Across the Street," but did play a couple new tunes, and of course told some stories as only Leo can. His playing gets better every time I see him.

Just saw Leo live for the first time in about 25 years. Took my wife and son---we were just knocked out. His albums are great, but live...the music, the stories. Thursday was so great in Seattle I (and my wife, who humors me) went again Saturday night in Everett. I wish I'd known he came out on stage after performing. I don't know what I'd have said, but... Anyway, I'll be counting the days until he comes here again.

Seen Leo 4-20 at Benaroya Hall, Seattle. The Hall is state of the art, even Leo commented that he can actually hear pitch in there (which is quite uncommon). The show was something old, something new, something borowed, and something blue. For an encore he did Vasaline Machinegun, commenting on calling John Fahey, saying he was passing though Portland and would stop by to chat, but when he got there "John wasn't home" ha!(you know John). He did a new piece on the 12 STR. "very nice" very reminiscent. He did a Pete Seeger Tune about "The Bank" I think we all can relate to this, even more nowdays. Across the Street still chokes me up (I guess I really haven't lived the blues).

Reminisced a little with a couple in line about the first time I saw Leo in about "71" he played my guitar on stage and his opening act was Steve Goodman, who "sang his hart out", god bless him.

Leo Never Sounded Better.

To Leo - Not enough thanks can i offer as an exchange for how much you have given me. Since i first heard you from 3 feet away at the 'Quiet Knight'in Chicago back in '69, (thanks to my ex-wife) and then whenever you would come in to town. Your music, your playing, your anecdotes, your being - all a pure joy. You inspired me to get a 12 string and dobro, when i realized that aluminium foil taped over the sound hole of a six string wouldn't work, - and play your music as best as i can. Still working on it over 30 years later, and still enjoying coming close to your sound. May you live and continue to reward us with your music for a long time to come, and may i have the opportunity to hear you live again.

I'm embarassed to admit until last week I had never heard of Leo Kottke. A friend, to whom I shall forever be indebted, gave me one of Leo's tapes and I am in total awe of the man and his playing. I have played that tape every day since and it just gets better and better.

Now I'm on a mission to find all of Leo's music possible. Chet, what's his name and Les, whom ever, have been relegated to the shelf permanently. I have finally found the master of the guitar.

I appreciate this site because of the dedication shown and the amount of information about Leo. It's obvious immediately, this site is not only a work of art, but also a love of art.

Thank you for such a marvelous site with so much information about such a magical guitarist.

Bruce, this message is for you.

It's been awhile since I actually sat down and spent time at this Kottke site. I just finished viewing your video clips of Leo as well as listening to most of the audio pieces. Wow, you did an awesome job putting this all together.

Whenever I speak of Leo Kottke to people who aren't familiar with him, I tend to direct them this way. You have an incredible amount of info on the man available here to see, hear and even discuss with.

I recall someone once crediting you regarding this website as a "labor of love." It is quite obviously true..:-)

Thanks for all the hard work it takes to maintain and keep the site alive, Bruce. Some pretty neat friendships have even developed as a result of the comradery found here.

It's a great place to share our "Kottke" musical appreciation.

My feet are smiling.....:-)

Hello,
Nice site. Is there an "official" Kottke site? This one looks fine to me. Been a fan for years.

Hey Patsy! I think "Norm" from Orstailia might be having a lend of you. To say something like "not bad" or even "not that good" is actually quite a compliment down here.......
Anyway, great site to discover, just when I thought my wife and I were the only people to have ever heard of Leo outside of his home country. He gets to Australia quite often (even though he almost drowned here once off Rottnest Island near Fremantle)and its always an experience never to be forgotten.

I'm a die hard Kottke fan. Been following him and his music ever since the the late 60's and early 70's when he played at the Whole Coffee House at the University of Minnesota.

His concert at the Sheldon Theater in Red Wing was fabulous. He was on! His best selection of tunes that I've heard yet. He never fails to amaze me. Would love to play some of his music and play it well. After banging away at that goal for the past ^%&*(^#E* years (too embarassed to admit how many) I'm still not completely satisfied with even one song.

Leo is the best at what he does.

Leo played in Hickory, NC recently. I'm still reeling in disapointment as I had to miss the event. I'm sure he was awesome. Saw him in Memphis about ten years ago and he was nothing short of flawless, not to mention absolutely hilarious.

Too cool for school.I first heard of L.K. in 1974 as a sr. in h.s. at a Quaker Prep school in West Branch,Ia.It soothed me to experience his style. Saw him in Des Moines acouple years ago or three, at the "Art in the dark coffee house". Fantastic!! I turned my old pop onto L.K. recently and he nabbed my tape. Thanks for all the years of truly excellent artistic creation and for providing me with a path for common ground with my 74yr. old Dad.

Dear mr Kottke, I have visited three of your concerts here in Sweden. The first, and most unforgettable, was in Stockholm at the "Mosebacke Etablissement", the hot summer of 1975. It was a very special, "magic" atmosphere in that little, crowded room, whith you just sitting there in front of us, playing and, too, telling odd stories. Do you remember? I´m looking forward to see you here in Sweden again, when do you come back here?

A Great Site for a Great Musician!

I can't remember when I first heard Leo Kottke play, it was live in around 1970. Enjoyed his early stuff, then lost rack of him for about 20 years until I joyfully rediscovered him on TV some years ago. He only gets better. And yes, he can sing!

This is a shot in the dark, but I am somewhat desperate. Does anyone happen to have an extra ticket to the November 6th concert at the Baird Auditorium in Washington, D.C.? I am #15 on the waiting list, but fear that I will miss the show without some assistance from someone. Please e-mail me if you can help.

I've seen Mr Kottke in concert a few times in Brisbane. The fist time I saw him was for the release of PECULIAROSO. He played at the Metro Theatre here in Brisbane. The Metro was a "rustic" building built out of corrugated iron and lots of charm. A few weeks after the concert we had a really violent storm that trashed the place. Quite fitting really: Metro Theatre, There you Go! (WOOSH!! CLANG!! Bang!!)

Caught Leo's show in Owen's Mills, Md. last evening..... Incredible as always. The MAN never loses his touch and just gets better with time...:-)

I always come away from these live shows with an exhuberance that lasts for weeks. Good medicine for the soul, that Kottke creature is....:-)

Patty, still glowing.

saw leo in concert in july 99 with Cowboy Junkies in Cerritos CA -- Leo was great as usual -- but being the opener, was not onstage long enough for a leo-junkie like me. The cowboy junkies were okay -- though the lead singer had annoying stage habits -- like draping her arms over the mike stand like she was too tired to stand up and sing normally....(maybe that's her normal behavior??) -- so next time, Leo, PLEASE do a solo tour thru los angeles -- soon.

Hey Fred Bushor:

Thanks for sharing that great story about Pamela Brown on Sept.11th. I have to wonder what Kottke himself would think about the little gem you found!

By the way.....I love your profession....(or is it a hobby?)...saving unique music from the fire pits! You must have an incredible collection. My hat's off to ya! (except, I don't really wear a hat)

One Guitar, No vocals. Leo opened my musical ears with his first album and this "First album since his Last album" is absolutely wild. I got away from Leo for while; I explored elsewhere and I'm glad I did. The newness of the sound is like making the discovery all over a again. Questions: what kind of guitars does he use, any baritones, brand names, hand mades, 6 or twelve bari's,tunings for each song, slide on which songs, i.e., a discography. I saw Leo in about 1973. The Bill was Leo, Frank Zappa, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, New York. Talk about a show! What a bill! I have not seen Leo since then. This last album is as if he took youth discovery pills or something. The creative energy is something you very seldom hear on albums by musicians over 24 or 25 years old. Man, I am Diggin' it. Thank god he doesn't sing on it. He really can sound like geese farts on a muggy day.

I've been rescuing records from landfill sites for a little while now. That only means I go to thrift stores and yard sales and buy interesting records to keep them from being destroyed. This past week I bought an 8-track tape by a guy named Gene Tracy that features a live report on a farting contest. You can see how I'm really into the cultural "Stuff".

Anyway, besides that, I bought a few more records. Two by Mahalia Jackson to add to the others I have; one by General Motors titled," Chevrolet Sings of Safe Driving and You". The record contains such memorable tunes as," An Exciting Thing (Driving a car); Grown-up Baby (Driving psychology)and many others.

Another album I rescued was "TWANG" A Country Song by Duane Eddy and an album, by Nina and Fredrik.

However, best of all was a record that features a reading of the book by D.H. Lawrence, "LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER". It's on the CAEDMON label # TC1116 (1959) and the reader is PAMELA BROWN !!
Yeah! That's what I thought too. Imagine, Pamela brown ! Remember the opening line in the song...I'm the guy who didn't marry pretty Pamela Brown??

I wonder what the "real" king (Kottke)of the twelve string would think about that?

You obviously put a lot of effort into this web site, and it provides a lot of good information. I've been trying to let Leo know that an old friend and fan of his, Turley Richards, has finally gotten a web site (www.turleyrichards.com) prior to releasing a double cd of his music. Contact Turley at turrich@bellsouth.net. If you can pass it on I'd appreciate it. What's the possibility that their paths could cross again?
