Entries for October 2002 - August 2003
This morning I had the very pleasant experience of introducing my 21 yr old son to the music of LK. He (my son) had come home from his night job and was sitting playing his acoustic guitar (also self-taught) and I said "you know, when you play that way I am reminded of someone I used to listen to." And I dug out an LP (yes - that's right - an LP ("My Feet Are Smiling")) and put it on the turntable for him before I left for work.
I asked him what he thought and he just said "I LOVE this - it is amazing".
I left him sitting listening and pouring over my old LP's to see what other treasures I might have!
That was an "ahhhhhh" moment for me!!Gail

I saw Leo for the first time as an 18th birthday present when he was the warm-up band for Muddy Waters in the Berkshire mountains. The first show was rained out, which my brother and I discovered after driving 2+ hours. They had rescheduled the performance for the next week, I think, and my brother (never having heard him) said, "This guy better be worth it." When we finally saw him perform, my brother grabbed the camera from me and started shooting madly. I think he ended up thinking it was worth it. :-) I have since seen Leo live 3 times~~once at the premiere of his and Steven Paulen's (was that his name?) combined effort for the concert piece that was aired on PBS. My 10 year old daughter was now with me. There were places where he got ahead of the orchestra because he was getting into the music and he turned to apologize to Paulen...who cared? None of us who were the Kottke element in the audience cared. He came back here early this year. He never ceases to blow my mind and I keep trying to figure out how he's making all that beautiful noise, but it's one of those mysteries of life that I'll be happy if it's never answered.
Anyway, I saw at least one other comment that this site was better than his "official"; certainly it's a much stronger Kottke fix...
Thanks,
BarbaraBarbara

I enjoy music I can "see" like that by Leo Kottke. I think music should stir emotions and many of them are visual like great symphonies. George

Gina,
I wouldn't be surprised if the "chat room" didn't have a few problems... the technology being used there is about five years' old. A web site is like a house... if you don't maintain it and add improvements, gradually it falls apart and loses its value. To extend the metaphor ... I've been an absentee landlord for a couple of years unfortunately. If I ever get some "spare time", I'm going to revamp this web site from the ground up. Just don't hold your breath. In the interim, use the site at your own risk. :)Bruce

hi again, just wanted to thank the two dudes that showed up for the cyber gathering...i guess i forgot it was fathers day and i reckon a heck of alot of leo fans are probably fathers or maybe children of fathers and all that sort of stuff,so it probably wasnt a good day..we'll try again..however if you'r reading this bruce head..i think there's some sort of malfunction in the chatroom because when more than two people were on there the chat rooom kinda went haywire and stopped working ,so maybe there's a bug to work out there..
thanks againgina

Excellent site. I got a new guitar for xmas, and rediscovered the pleasure of good sound, and with it, the listening ear that enhances the understanding and enjoyment of Kottke's tunes. I still have trouble following some of his meanders, though. Paul Gilmore

Does anyone know how to get in touch with Leo's "people"? My boyfriend is related to him, but the family has lost touch. I wanted to see if I could contact Leo in any way...
My boyfriend doesn't know I'm doing this. We both love his music and I thought an autograph would be a great surprise for him.Kelly

Just thought I'd drop ya a line and say hey. Haven't chatted with ya in a couple years and wanted to say your Kottke website still rocks. Moving to Dallas, TX in Sept /03 and have already marked down the Fort Worth shows for Nov. Will be there for sure.
Started writing finally. I'll email y'all once the CD is started and finished. (Still playing every day)
Hope all is well.

Hey Bob,
The thing is... I have TONS of Kottke video footage (mostly pre-2000) but getting it all digitized and presentable for the web is a challenge. Someday I do hope to make more of it available, unless I get in copyright trouble. :)

Yes there should be more footage. Someday 100 years from now, people will be saying "there used to be this guy Leo Kottke "oh the things he could do with a guitar, you wouldn't belive it.... I belive, Leo and I live in the same space of time. Oh the luck, I'v had. Bob D'Angelo

Saw Leo in Fergus Falls, MN on 2/21/03. Even had the delight of eating at a restaurant before the concert and he was seated at the table next to us! We were well behaved and didn't interrupt his dinner but tried to eavesdrop on his marvelous voice. The concert was awesome...sold out! Gail

Yeah, I saw the Peekskill show. Great to see Leo playing so close to home. Re: Haircut, I say no - I saw hime a year or two ago in CT (Bridgeport?) and even he commented that his haircut was a little too close to Jim Carrey's in Dumb and Dumber - I think the shaggy look suits him much better. The show was good, he seemed a little stiff at first but really loosened up. The show built steadily, I thought, and really grooved by the middle / end. I really enjoyed his rants this time, I used to find myself wishing he would play more and talk less, but I have really grown to enjoy his ramblings as much as his playing.
I have a question: Probably the highlight of the show for me was when Leo played a beautiful version of Pete Seeger's "Living in the Country". I know there is a recording available on "My Feet Are Smiling", but he absolutely destroyed it by playing too fast (He himself calls that album "playing ahead of the tempo - missing the pocket entirely"). My question, is there a recording of Leo playing "Living in the Country" available (the way he plays it these days, or at least at a reasonable tempo)?
Sorry I know this is a guestbook and I'm treating it like a forum.Ross

Two hours of pure joy! Couldn't have had a better seat (3rd row, center with a short person sitting in front of me)! Leo was so relaxed and just told story after story and even got confused about what he was saying and forgot what he was talking about to begin with.
He played his 'usual' but used the slide more than he has over the last few years; and someone requested he play 'Julie's House' and he explained why he can't anymore; has something to do with his pinky finger on his left hand.
Not much else to report. I didn't see anyone I know and I didn't stick around to say 'hi'.
Ingrid
P.S. -- If anyone should see him in the next few days and he looks the way he did tonight, tell him it's time for a haircut!Ingrid

Hi everyone,
FYI, I have removed the "discussion board" from guitarmusic.org. The application is obsolete and no longer supported. It wasn't getting much use anyway. At some point, I'll add a new forum...when I get around to finally redesigning this site. In the interim, you can just use this guestbook to post your questions, comments, etc.Webmaster

In 1972 at Union College in Schenectady NY, my room-mate & I were on the conert committee. We were given the task of picking up Leo at the Albany airport and making hotel arrangements for him. We invited him to a barbeque at our dorm and he ended up playing guitar in the dorm until about 3 AM, jamming with a guy from our dorm for a bit and staying the night. He was a great guy. Except for a few of us who had "6 & 12 string" & "Mudlark" it was the first time most everyone had heard him. WHAT A SHOW! The official show was the next day, but it was the unofficial jam at the dorm that is a great memory. s
