This time it was because I received his video _Home and Away_ and just had to see what it's like trying to learn a song given a video of the artist playing it. It certainly helped me notice voicings and positionings! Anyhow, here is the result of my procrastination this Sunday. Hope someone enjoys it. Dean P.S. As usual, linefeeds inserted to print nicely at 66 lines/page. P.P.S. I highly recommend _Home and Away_. Excellent video. As a consequence you all get an updated version of "Taxco Steps" by Leo Kottke. (And depending on how much more procrastination I accomplish, you may also get updates to "Airproofing" and "I Yell at Traffic" :) Enjoy! Dean "Taxco Steps" by Leo Kottke. Transcribed by Dean Gaudet. Based on versions from _Regards From Chuck Pink_ and _Home and Away_. Some assembly required. This is a rough outline of what Leo plays. The majority of the piece is here, except the solo part C is a bit rough. On _Regards_ there's an electric guitar filling in the solo. Live, Leo does his own unique thing (which I haven't been able to reproduce, let alone notate. This is the sort of rhythmic section that gives a pice the Kottke signature.). This piece is loaded with syncopation and ghost notes. I chose to notate none of this. My timings are just guidelines, listen to the recording to get it as exact as you want. In fact, to get the strumming patterns right you'll have to listen to the recording. I'm just not too keen on timing out the 16ths and syncopation. As with many Kottke songs, it is based on a few ideas which he uses over and over again in different ways so as not to bore the listener. The whole song is based on an A B7 E chord progression (time to look at how many ways you can play those three chords :). Steel 6-string, standard tuning, no capo. "Taxco Steps" by Leo Kottke Original Transcription by Dean Gaudet Revised by Bruce Head Based on version from "Home and Away". Steel 6-string, standard tuning, no capo. ============================================================================ This is pretty much the same as Dean's original transcription, except that I've modified Part B and added to Part C. After frame-by-frame analysis of Leo's playing on the video, I think I'm close (or as close as I'm going to get). Notes: 1. In Part B, you should be able to hear three voices (bass, mid and high). 2. Due to the amount of syncopation and muting in Leo's playing, I found it difficult to transcribe the timing. This is more of a guide. The X's in the transcription are mutes. To get it right, listen to the tune or better yet watch him play it on the video, if you can find a copy. Especially for Part C, where Leo has that special rhythmic groove. 2. In Part C, "TS" means thumb strum. Leo strums these chords with his right-hand thumb. 3. All the "vigorous strumming" (listen to the recording to get the rhythm, it's kind of flamenco-like) Leo does with his index finger and thumb held loosely together. 4. In Part C, Leo fingers the E7/4 chord with his left-hand thumb over the fretboard at the fifth-fret on the E and A strings, his index finger barred at the fourth-fret on the D,G,B and high E strings, and his ring finger barred at the fifth-fret on the B and high E strings. 5. In Part C, the (V) means vibrato. Leo adds a little vibrato to these chords.
