What can be said about Leo that hasn't already been said? Virtuosity and quirkiness (and I mean that as a _compliment_!!) make him the one of the world's best performers, whether live or recorded. All the best to Leo and the folks who maintain this site.

I congratulate those of you who put in a Kottke site. The man is clearly in his own class of talent and music.
I truly enjoy his selections, and do not think that his voice sounds like "geese farts on a muggy day"
I ask people all over the place, 1 out of 75 might know of his music, unfourtunate cretins :) .

Leo,
I would like to see if we are related in anyway.
My Kottke side of the family is from Mankato,Minn. I was
wondering if your family is the same. My grandfather's name
was Harold Kottke. I am asking you these questions because
there aren't too many Kottkes in the world.
Hope you respond soon. or call me at (408)765-3141 (Work)

Nice site!.... I have been a maniacal fan of LK since I first
heard him. Have been trying to "lift" his stuff ever since.
Have a few tunes with his influence pasted all over them.
The coolest mammal on the face of the planet.....
Will revisit when I get my want list together and can offer
some of my own observations.
I hope you do get in touch with LK to maybe disseminate more
info on his whereabouts and plans.

Thanks for all the work on this site!
Spring of 1971 Leo was one of several acts in a "folk
festival" at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.
The opening tune was Vaseline Machine Gun, and I remember
saying to myself, "So THAT's what a 12-string is for!"
I've been a fan/disciple (whatever) ever since. I made my
living playing axe for a while during the 70's, and always
managed to include a Kottke tune or two in the set. I have
many cherished memories of concerts attended all over North
America, and a few priceless memories of conversations back-
stage after a couple of them. My collection of recordings
is probably as extensive as anyone's, and I keep my compil-
lation of magazine articles about Leo in a fireproof box.
My wife had never heard of Kottke before she met me, but
she's a fan now, too. After the first time I took her to
one of his concerts, which was shortly after we had our
first child, she asked, "Why don't we write him a letter
and ask him to make an album of lullabies?"
Could a mother offer any greater compliment? Both of our
kids are now fans!
I recently played a Taylor 12 string Kottke Signature Model
at a local guitar store. It's about as close as I've ever
come to actually sounding like him (or imagining I did), so
I'll probably put that on my list to Santa Claus and keep
striving...and listening.
Thanks, again for creating this page! Great job!

Great site!!! A lot of good info without the glitz of the PM site.
I've been a fan of LK since hearing the Armadillo LP played on my college room mate's stereo which was so bad
he had to stack nickels on the tone arm to get it to play without skipping... I've been to a few concerts over the years,
most recently an outdoor performance to a small, hardy group of souls at the Milwaukee Zoo a year or so ago, sitting in a summer
down pour while listening to "Stealing" is a memory I will not soon forget. Thanks for all your effort.. I will be back!!

Leo is such a rare and wonderful artist.
I've wondered many times how such an artist comes to be.
I've asked myself questions like:
Was it the trombone? and,
Which came first, the sense of humor or the technique?
But what the heck! I'm so grateful to have known his music.
It has enriched my life. Thanks Leo.

I'm always happy to see information in print about the
greatest steel string guitarist of all time. I've been a fan for
25 years and never get tired of his music. I guess I can play
about 2/3 of his tunes and in learning them (over 25 years)
learned how to play the guitar. I am an engineer by profession
but still have a creative side. It knows that the little
nuggets of art that Leo has recorded are all part of
one of the lofitest works of art in creation: Leo Kottke.
PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK

My brother and I are tremendous fans of Leo Kottke. It has been my unique privilege to see Leo in concert so many times I've lost count. I've been fortunate to see Leo three times this year already and if he shows up anywhere else near here during the remainder of the year you can bet I'll be there, too. Most recently I attended two of Leo's shows on consecutive nights, once at the Denver Botanic Gardens - a good show but hampered by the fact that I sat at Leo's back - and the next night at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre, a most magical occasion. If you ever have a chance to see Leo Kottke at Mishawaka, by all means do it. It's the single greatest Leo Kottke show I've ever seen and I've been fortunate to see him in some intimate settings. I've just recently relocated from Texas to Colorado but I've left standing instructions with my brother to watch for Leo's seemingly annual swing through Austin. And if my brother gets us tickets, I'll fly back to Austin for no other reason than to see Leo one more time. I just can't get enough of this guy. What an amazing artist. I would love to be able to meet Leo face to face just to thank him for all his music and the hours of real enjoyment which he has given me. Thanks, Leo!

I grew up in Minnesota, and at the age of 7 was allowed
to set up and play our reel-to-reel tape deck. John Prine's
first two albums were favorites, as were some selections from
Greenhouse and My Feet Are Smiling. Needless to say, I am now
an unemployed English Ph.D, but my life is richer for Leo's
music; I enjoy being awed repeatedly.
Excellent page. I am very impressed by the combination of
fanaticism and professionalism--it speaks well of both the
subject and the compiler. Keep up the good work.

I've been a devoted fan since discovering Kottke's music in
1990. I have all of his CD's except:
-12-String Blues
-Circle'Round The Sun
-Live In Europe
-Kottke, Lang & Fahey
If anybody knows how to get a hold of these, please let
me know.
My band, The Bremen Town Musicians, had opened up for Leo
at a show in Winnipeg in 1994. Leo was a great guy to

I remember the first few Leo notes to hit my ears as if it
happened this morning. It was in '75 in a record store, and
the tune was Mona Ray. I bought the album and have been a
devoted fan ever since.

My all-time favorite concert experience was Leo at the
Live Oak Music Festival, Santa Barbara CA, in the summer of
'94, outside in the warm night air. I yelled out for "Bean
Time", Leo shot a startled glance at me, mumbled something
about it "not being ready for prime time" then "Aw, what the
heck!" and proceeded to blaze through it. Ah, bliss!

Thanks for the great page!

uh. Saw Leo in person for the first time this spring, playing
at one of the Princeton U. "eating clubs". I refrained from
the temptation to walk up to him and say, "Wow! My dad is a
real big fan of yours!" After a string of bad rock bads with
names like "Red Red Meat", such a pleasure to hear some real
music in Campus Club. Everyone who went, most of whom hadn't
even heard of LK before, was very impressed, even to the
point where we decided to give the social chair one more chance
at life. We're currently in the process of trying to decide
whether to drop out of school, buy an orange VW bus, and follow
him around on tour...

This is a terrific site!! Been a listener since '72 (heard the first strains of "Tennessee Toad" for the first live recording on Capital and I was home. To the fellow asking for clues to "Owls", it's my sense that it's a G-tuning.

Here's a "Met Leo Story". After a concert in Houston, I walked backstage and got a chance to meet Leo. I asked if he'd ever tried any Taylors (I just bought my 555 12-string and I knew they we're making his guitar). This was in '82 apparently before he'd gone over to them and he was being polite but said he'd never tried 'em. Well, I was in the process of figuring out "Easter and the Sargasso Sea" and I wanted to ask how to deal with bending the harmonic above the nut but Taylor (then) built them with a piece of wood flush up against the strings as they came across the nut. When Leo heard that he said, "they're doin' that?? Well, good for them!!" He told me I could remove that piece of wood, stick some spongy material in the space to soak up the "jangly crud", and I'd be fine. Then he said: "But if your guitar blows up.. don't blame me".

Great page, keep up the terrific work!!

By far the best site I've found yet! Thank you. I have been a fan more several years, and I have collected several items of Leo.
However there are tons of things here I haven't seen before. I missed my chance to by 12-string Blues about a year ago.
Being a guitar player I have found many TABS, and am still looking for more, if anyone can help.
I have to say that I do have one thing that very few other people have, and that is a TAYLOR LKSM-6.
It is the Leo Kottke 6 string guitar. Leo told me there were 50 made, Taylor says 25. I purchased it from Taylor about 3 months ago, and I have to admit I felt like I had won the lottery.
I intend to get the 12 string soon. If anyone knows of any TABS, or if someone has video, I would love to talk trade. I have several, but a I am looking for the Austin City Limits #1.
Thanks again, and keep up the great site.

Great job, great site. Reassuring to know there are those who won't stare back with that "Leo who?" look when you discuss the best guitarist on the planet. I've been following since 1971 and I'm still amazed. I am not a guitarist, but Leo's music has made me a much keener listener. I've attended a dozen concerts and found his wit, perspective, and music to just keep getting sharper all the time. One question: Anybody know why he's stopped performing "Louise" lately?

Dear Mr. Kottke,
I have been a fan of yours since 1970, I think that you are a very gifted musician - an incredable guitarist. It must have been quite an experience to play on the same stage as Joe Pass. I once asked you (many years ago) what you thought of Django. You said that you thought he had agreat sense of humor. It took a long time, but I finally figured out what you meant.

This is cool! The guy had a ridiculously profound influence on my life. He showed me it was OK to use right arm like a maniac, have the thumb coming down on EVERY beat,
and to tell blatantly false stories- 'My brother and I built a rocket ship to go to the moon out of dicarded beer cans. When we had taken off however, the alcohol fumes
got ot us and we ended up on Mars. Well on Mars, they have these giant pyramids, just like in Egypt, and in those pyramids are these mummies. These mummies don't have
foolish mortal to chase around however, so they spend their time playing guitar. That was when I first heard Leo Kottke. A mummy on Mars was playing 'Vaseline Machine Gun'...

I have been listening to Leo Kottke since 1971 when I first heard the "Armadillo" album.
My guitar playing has been solely due to the influence of his music. My original copy of
the album disappeared in a house fire in 1976 and was replaced by my brother in 1995 from
a used record store in Everett, WA. Last July, I had my first opportunity to see Leo live
at the Backstage in Ballard(Seattle). Not being satisfied with just his awesome concert,
I hung around down by the stage afterwards and lo and behold, Leo came out for a few quick chats. I did get his autograph and nice 'Joe, Hello' on the back of the album for posterity. Visit my website and leave some e-mail, I have lots of "hints" on just about all of Leo's songs that I can share.

This is all very wonderful! I rediscovered Leo Kottke after enjoying him as a college student in Minnesota. Back then, all was brand-new. He would sometimes come to St. Cloud State University, where I was a student. I have some old issues of Insider - "The music newspaper of the upper midwest" dated 1971, one of which has an interview with Leo, which I was fortunate enough to have him autograph when he performed in Ashland, KY a couple of years back. Magazines also include advertisements for his Mudlark album, then selling for $3.59. Have you seen this material? Thank you for all the work that you have done. Yours, Dori
