Hi Bruce,
Enjoyed this site tremendously. After listening to the Leo Kotke tape with you, I can understand people's enthusiasm of this artist.

My wife and I recently caught Leo's shows July 12 in Bellingham, Washington and July 13 in Vancouver, BC. The Bellingham show was highly enjoyable but the Vancouver show was UNBELIEVABLE, especially versions of " I Yell at Traffic " and " Jack Fig ". We will definitely be at his next show in the Pacific Northwest.

Hello all,
Just attended Leo's concert in Las Vegas Nevada, what a night! it was overcast, cool and a light breeze swept over the setting to keep things just perfect.
Leo had fun with an insect he described as "big as my fist" on stage untill he finaly had to "do it in" with his slide, (dropped it from chest height) bulls eye first try!
it was the second time I had seen Leo live, the first time was at Ceasers Palace years ago, he opened for the Moody Blues one night.
I am and have been a Leo fan since 1969 when I first heard him on an 8 track tape of all things!
(Still have the tape by the way) and its for sale!
Thanks for the time you spent reading this post ya'all

The 7.11 show in Seattle was by far the most intimate and cozy
Leo show I've ever seen; the Backstage is a small, dark tavern
with just enough seats to make a good audience. When Leo forgot
the words to Jack Gets Up, everyone was right there to help--
shouting out "Car Keys" or, "breathmint" or "ice cream kid"! Le
seemed appreciative and had a good laugh over it.

Love Leo Kottke, I think he's the best 12 string guitarist/composer's ever. If ever had the chance to meet him I'd tell him what an insperation he has made on my 17 year old life and my 3 year old guitar life. Love your great music please keep up the good work for all the young guitarist out there!

Leo's concert on 7-12-97 was truely a "haunting" experience.
I'm sure the resident ghosts at Mt. Baker theatre in Bellingha
m WA are still "moved" by his performance.

Glad to hear you are still around Leo:
If you get this message someday, I was at your concert in the mid 70's at the University of
Alaska -Fairbanks. A military budy asked if
I would go with him to your concert, and I have to
admit I didn't know who or what you were. But
after the concert was over you had ONE MORE
very beliveing fan of 6-12 string gitar music.
I never knew one person could make a gitar
sound like TWO people playing it
at the same time. Fans, as you know, this man is
to 6-12 strings as chopstiks are to the Chinese.
Well I guess that is enough prase for the $100.00
(ha ha). Hope to see some more LEO fan letters soon.

Saw Leo open for Emmylou Harris in about 1976, in Chicago. Was going
with one group of friends primarily to see Leo. At that point had never even heard
of Emmylou, but there began a lifelong affection, also. Leo was great. Last fall I
found out he has been appearing at an old Opera house in Woodstock, IL, for the past several
years, unbeknownst to me (damnit). Saw him there last year and LOVED it. Sound was
unbelievable. Leo was hilarious, and since I had seen him before, was not terribly surprised by the
amount of talk. This was lost on some I dragged along, but I loved it all. Virtuoso guitar and lots of great humor.

Hello,

I've been on the net for just a short amount of time, learning "Sites"
and finding issues of importance to me personal, exciting, boring and yes very confusing at times.
I just thought finding location would enlighten me to Leo's Tour dates. And, it has. Just a question that I'd
like answered. When are you planning to return to Cincinnati again. I missed your last show, and noticed cities
near and far on your tour. But, when are you going to return.

Thank you,

I was very pleased to find this homepage. There's a degree to which a person can come to feel alone in the world over Leo Kottke!! Few have heard of him or understand what you're getting so excited about.
I must admit that I was slightly disappointed with my last Leo concert. He's got a great sense of humor, but to some degree he let it take over too much. Of course the music was great despite some changes in the songs which seemed more the result of boredom than innovation. Nonetheless, he is one of the greatest players of all time. An inspiration!.

Keep on pickin'

Just got "Standing In My Shoes" in my hot little hands,
heard "Vaseline Machine Gun" and remembered that I know this
particular piece as "Machine #2", at least as it is listed on the
old Capitol releases. Am I nuts? (My wife says I am, but I'm
open to a second opinion.) Can anyone else out there verify that?
I have "The Best", and that is how it is listed -- it is also the
first cut on the LP.

Kudos to Bruce Head, o great webmaster, for such an inspiring and
awesome page on one of the greatest guitarists to ever live.
Keep it up!!!

In reference to Brian Artese's recording from "Home and Away", it seems odd to me that you wouldn't want to
record the spoken stories for their humor content and insight into Leo's bizarre sense of humor. The tune he
plays with Chet Atkins and Doc Watson is actually a version of John Fahey's "The Last Steam Engine Train",
which Leo covered on GREENHOUSE. It's worth listening to, if just to hear Doc Watson's comment after playing it:
"I don't know the name of that, but it's about the best pickin' thing I ever got holt of it."
Thanks for the listing of tunes; there were some I couldn't identify.

Hi folks
Being a Kottke fan for about 20??? years I came across a video about Leo where he plays a gig with Doc Watson and Chet Atkins. It was awesome music. Does anybody know whether this song is available on CD or record? Are there any other songs by this trio??????
Please let me know if you do.

Great site! I stumbled on it by chance today.

I've been a Kottke fan for over 25 years. I searched for almost ten years to replace a copy of 12 String Blues. I know it's out of print, and only 100 copies were made. Do the tapes still exist? Is there any hope it will be re-released on CD someday? If the tapes are gone, what is the legality of 'preserving' one of the 1000 original vinyls on CD?

Wow! I was pleasantly suprised to find this site. It is so nice to see fans signing in from all over the world. My brother in law has been a Kottke fanatic for years and has caught every show he can get to. I have been going to see him for the past five years. I will be catching the shows in L.A. and Orange County, CA in July this year and hope to see other online fans there as well.

Hey, if you know Leo's agent's e-mail, why don't you let me know? I haven't been able to find it on-line anywhere!

But even if his agent does have e-mail, do you think it's a good idea to give it out freely to everyone? I wouldn't want to encourage people to send tour schedule inquiries through his agent-- there'd be an awful lot of e-mails! Besides, Leo's tour schedule is posted on the web site here and is updated regularly.

I just want to add a loud, plaintive and pathetically helpless appeal for a copy of "12-String Blues." I'll pay big money and even offer my services as a simpering lackey to any god who can lead me to one. Pity me: I keep listening to Bruce's generous 60-second sample of "Furry Jane" over and over and over, like the sad specimen I am. I was astonished: here's Leo singing as a tenor, and he sounds damn good! No joke! He gives his voice subtle, gravelly breaks even before the falsetto bits. I generally tend to prefer Leo's instrumentals -- but this bloody little sample haunts me, ye gods! I can't get that voice out of my head! I never thought I'd encounter one of Leo's tenor-attempts that sounds this good. Somebody please contact me if they know of anyone near Chicago who would let me tape the album in exchange for jewels, spices from exotic lands, and much obsequious grovelling.

My sister got me hooked on Leo in the early '70s. I bought her "6 & 12 String Guitar" for Christmas but started listening to it and decided to keep it. Let her buy her own damn album. I have since been a Leo lifer. I've heard him at several different venues over the years, most recently at Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth on March 20, 1997. I even got his autograph and reminded him of a time I interviewed him before a show at the University of Houston in the spring of '78 (he was rolling a joint at the time). While listening to him play, I get the feeling that all is right with the world. No other performer, musical or otherwise, gives me that. Next time you see him in concert, request "Snorkel." I don't think he's recorded it, but I highly recommend it. And I'm really jazzed to find this site. This is my first night of having my Internet access up and running, and the first photo I downloaded was of Leo. How appropriate. Greetings, fellow travelers. Bruce is great, Bruce is good, thank you Bruce for this, uh, site. (OK, so it doesn't rhyme.)

Cheap thrill: I just recorded "Home & Away" onto audio tape (with the help of a cheap audio output adaptor for the VCR) -- the audio quality is surprisingly good, and now I feel like I have a new Kottke live album. (no small pleasure)

Although I like Leo's palaver, I wanted the tape to have just the music, so I noted the time indexes for the beginnin and end of each song. Assuming all copies are the same (in terms of the amount of "dead" tape at the beginning), here are the indexes if you rewind the tape completely and set the counter at 0:00 --

Taxco Steps 0:59 - 4:40
Ojo 6:45 - 10:29
I Yell at Traffic 11:30 - 14:42
Airproofing 16:02 - 21:43
Rings 23:55 - 28:00
Short Wave 31:30 - 33:58
The Ice Field 35:46 - 41:02
Louise 42:30 - 47:02
Train & the Gate/
Machine medley +
Little Martha 48:18 - 54:47

I forgot to record the index for the tune Leo plays with Atkins and Watson.

This tape has the most rhythmically infectious version of Airproofing I've ever heard. I can't get over it.

June 13, 1997 - saw Leo last night at McCarter theatre in
Princeton, NJ. He was outstanding but I was disappointed at
the length of time he actually played. He was on with Iris
Demente, a country singer who opend the show for him.
What makes Leo particulary great to see, aside from his
phenomonal guitar playing, is his funny stories in between
his tunes. I'd love to see Leo jam with other great
guitar artists.

I first "experienced" Leo Kottke via his "The Best" album
around the mid-'80s and I haven't been the same since then!
This particular album title says to me (and so many others)
what's been known all along: Leo Kottke is "The Best."
He performed two years in a row at the Rialto Theatre
in Raleigh as part of a benefit to help the Hospice of
Wake County, which both shows were immediately sell-
outs! (Way to go, Leo!!!!) Needless to say, when the
performance and the storytelling were over for the evening,
every single person there left with a glowing smile on
their face and a Leo-song in their heart!! This man is
simply a wonderful and multi-talented guitarist who's as
"down-to-earth" and friendly as anyone you'd ever want to
meet! I even managed to get his autograph for my "Peculi-
aroso" CD!! What a treasure, this artist! Thank you, Leo,
so much for your music, your talent, your humor, your good-
nature, just EVERYTHING!!! Now everybody, get out there and
spread the word about this amazing talent so he can start
living "high on the hog" like Madonna and Mariah Carey!
(Why should THEY get all the money when someone like
Leo's much more deserving of it, right?? Am I right?
I said, "AM I RIGHT???") Power to the Kottkeheads!!

Bruce,
After all this time, I thought it might be a good idea to
finally drop a note of "Thanks" for the great web-site. Contrary
to what AG magazine says, we all think it's a hell of a site
for a one-man operation.....and then a lot more (that is if
TabPigs could actually talk, instead of type;-) ) That's
somewhat of an inside joke for anyone else reading this :-o

I would also like to invite other Kottke-style players from
the Nashville/Franklin Tenn area to email me. It is hard to
find other picker's interested in Kottke's tunes, so I' am
hoping for the best I guess. Have quite a collection of Kottke
tab (non-OLGA)......it would be nice to meet up with folks
who may have trades in mind too.

Anyway, keep up the great job Bruce....many more people than
you know enjoy it!

For anyone interested in original, acoustic, fingerstyle guitar compositions with voicings similar to that of Leo Kottke, I work with a musician who just released a CD entitled, 'Postponing the Worm,' whose music consists of just that. He and I have managed to see Leo twice (it's tough tracking him down in the Heart of Dixie...) We saw him in Statesboro, GA October 1996 and then at the Variety Playhouse, Atlanta December 1996. Both shows were, of course phenomenal. If anyone is interested in purchasing one of John's CDs, they're $15.00 +1.50/SH, checks/money orders made out to John Danley, PO Box 70461, Montgomery (yes, really...), AL 36107. He tours around the southeast area, if anyone is interested in being added to his mailing list, e-mail me and I'll include you in any future shows, etc. (One day soon, I hope to master the concept of recording audio on the internet...) Thanks for taking the initiative to create this website.

Last night I caught the final minutes of a show on TV and being interviewd by a reporter was LK. I was blown away, I don't know what the show was about but it was great to see his wry smile and hear one last tune prior to sign off. I last heard Leo live in Boston in 1986-1987 timeframe at Symphony Hall, blew me away. I've followed his career since 1977 and have almost acquired all previous vinal and tape copies on CD. I prefer the strickly acoustic instrumental cuts but have some specific vocal favorites "Tell Mary", "Pamala Brown" I'm also suspicious that he is doing voice spots for Saturn (GM ) radio commericials, which occurred to me as a bit of a sellout (Brother Saturn). There is something totally mystical about this man and the music that flows from his fingers. He is an American Treasure.

Patty,

In response to your question below...unfortunately (or fortunately depending
on your opinion), Leo doesn't know a heck of a lot about the internet and doesn't
seem to care all that much either! Not a big surprise, given the amount of time
he spends on the road. So I'm not sure he'll be joining the IRC channel (or this
guestbook for that matter) any time soon but if he does, you'll be the first to know!
Seriously, I'm working on trying to make a connection to the man, but he is pretty
hard to get a hold of...

To answer the question "who is David Z", he is Prince's former producer. Leo and David go way back to the Capitol years when he (David Z) was producing Princes early albums, they used to be in the same recording studio. Leo has said that he wanted to make an album he could listen to with his feet, and David Z was an obvious choice. He worked with David Z previously on Big Head Todd and the Monsters "Sister Sweetly" record. I disagree with the earlier post on "Vaseline Machine Gun", I love the new version, it has a certain ethereal quality. I was stunned by "World Turning", it is an incredible cover, and is receiving heavy F.M. airplay here. There is not a klinker on this Cd IMHO, though I feel there seldom are. It IS very different, but that is what makes this guy so special.

I also picked up the new disc last night and my first impressions
are in line with the comments below. The stark, in-your-face
album cover reflects the production values (by the way, does anybody
know who "David Z" is?). Who would have imagined a Leo album
opening with a sampled drum loop?

My biggest surprise was "Corrina,
Corrina", which sounds nothing like any other version of that tune.
In fact, Leo played the instrumental part to this tune when I
saw him last November -- I imagine the piece was fully written
before the blues lyric was added. (By the way, the "chiming"
harmonic effects were duplicated live using some electronics units).

I can't say I cared for the Fleetwood Mac cover on first listen,
and some of the loping drum beats wear a bit thin. But Leo albums
always take a little digesting -- that's part of the fun.

Just picked up Leo's new one, "Standing in My Shoes." Most of us were concerned about too much backup, and because of that I didn't
expect to like this new recording. I was, however, pleasantly surprised. Leo sounds like he was having a good time,
his voice is in good form, and the songs have a kicky beat which may be a little much if you're not in the mood, but if you are in the mood,
it's very positive and happy. All of Leo's recordings have a personality of their own; this one is no exception. It's unlike any of his others.
Slower version of Vaseline is, to me, the biggest let down on this cd, he's never copied that awesome sound from when it
was recorded on 6&12 String.

I saw Leo in concert 3 times a month or so ago and will be seeing him numerous times in June.
I am continually impressed with how gifted he is, and how unique. He is an artist of the highest
magnitude. He is also a true gentleman.

Ah Leo, marry me. :)

At first I thought I was going to respond to the first few individual comments I read asking for tab but when I saw so many, I thought I'd just mention the following:

1) Mark Hanson's "Accent on Music" is a terrific compilation with both tab AND 1/2 speed cassette tapes. Look for his ads in the back/front (hell, maybe the middle) of any Accoustic Guitar issue
2) "Leo Kottke: Eight Songs" was published probably about eight years ago with transcriptions by John Stropes and is readily (at least it should be) available in most music/guitar shops. Stropes has supposedly collaborated with Leo again for another set of tab ("Morning is the Long Way Home", et. al), but I've yet to see that.

Hope that helps.. p.s., anybody ever see tab for/figure out "Coolidge Rising"? All I know is that its in "C"..

I was first turned-on to Leo in 1969. At the time I thought
I was a pretty good guitar player. I'd been playing for
seven whole years by then. But after listening to Leo, I
really knew what playing the guitar wasn't. I'm still playing
most every day and still performing and I will never approach
Leo's stunning skill and artistry. But that's okay. The
music is the thing, the attitude and the awareness that he
brings to the instrument should serve as a fine example to the
rest of us who are out here loving his music and are hopeful
that it will continue to filter into our own.

Thanks again and thank you Leo for the great music.

Just got the Rhino Anthology at a Best Buy - they claimed it has been out since the end of March???? It has a great selection of material and is a good buy for someone not familiar with his older material. For the real fanatics though, I'd recommend getting the CD rereleases of the old albums so you get all the songs.

For you guitar nuts, a guy in Florida is putting together a Bozo website. Anyone that may have info to contribute can email me. Also, if you have any questions about the site or the guitars, I'll make up an answer or refer you to someone who knows.

for an hour...
Leo finally came on stage and blew the audience away.
He is absolutely the best guitarist and entertainer I've
seen. I plan on watching every show I can!

THANKS LEO!!!!

One of the best things about Kottke is his sense of humor,
and this actually seems to come through in his playing. I
recently received a rather brooding email, from some guy
named Dave, who was all upset with a comment I had made
within an earlier post here at the Kottke guestbook. The
guy actually didn't grasp the fact that I was being facetious
with my comparison of Clapton to Kottke. All I can say is...
Lighten up Dave, and your hammer-ons will sound much more
natural.

Hi gang,
I'm here to offer my review of the Iris DeMent/Leo Kottke
concert in Chicago on April 27. Never saw or heard Iris before
but was impressed by her vocal power and some of her lyrics.
All songs were G C D and occasionally an Em. Somewhat limited
musically. Small bodied Taylor guitar sounded very thin with
no mids or bottom. The vocal power was almost annoying. She
played over an hour.

At last our hero. Leo was near flawless(2 klinkers that I
caught). Heard a variety of early and recent material. Were
treated to the new 'Snorkle' which has a phrase in it exactly
like 'Can't Quite Put it Into Words' a technique he has used in
the past. Did not hear 'Vaseline Machine Gun' or 'Standing in My
Shoes' due to be on the new album. Played only 45 minutes then
came back for encore with Iris. Didn't know the song but it was a very
nice duet. Total he only played about an hour, less time than
Iris. What we heard of Leo was what we've all come to expect
from smooth playing of some of his best stuff to a typically loopy
intro to 'Rings'. Only complaint was we didn't get enough.

My recommendation: See him every chance but if you have a choice,
SEE HIM ON A SOLO BILL.

Regards,
Jim

A couple of weeks ago I was anticipating our first Leo concert. Now I can say that it definitely won't be our last. We went to St. Louis and saw one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. There were plenty of favorite songs, along with several new tunes ("Snorkle" was a great new one). The audience was great -- a fun bunch. It was a memorable night for my husband, myself, and our 16 yr. old son. After the concert, my son and I decided to hang out at the stage door for a few minutes to see if we could catch a glimpse --- and after about 15 min. or so, Leo came out. My son's hand was shaking as he offered it to Leo. We were both thrilled to meet him and had probably a 20 min. conversation. He was great -- and my son (who's an avid fan and a guitarist, himself), will never, ever forget that evening.

One added note: We met (at the stage door) a cab driver named Lee -- he's one of the biggest fans I've ever met before --- anyway, Lee has been to more concerts than I can remember -- and he's a nice guy. If any of you ever meet Lee, the cab driver, be sure to say HI.
