Hey Fred Bushor:

Thanks for sharing that great story about Pamela Brown on Sept.11th. I have to wonder what Kottke himself would think about the little gem you found!

By the way.....I love your profession....(or is it a hobby?)...saving unique music from the fire pits! You must have an incredible collection. My hat's off to ya! (except, I don't really wear a hat)

Regards,

One Guitar, No vocals. Leo opened my musical ears with his first album and this "First album since his Last album" is absolutely wild. I got away from Leo for while; I explored elsewhere and I'm glad I did. The newness of the sound is like making the discovery all over a again. Questions: what kind of guitars does he use, any baritones, brand names, hand mades, 6 or twelve bari's,tunings for each song, slide on which songs, i.e., a discography. I saw Leo in about 1973. The Bill was Leo, Frank Zappa, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra at the Nassau Coliseum, Long Island, New York. Talk about a show! What a bill! I have not seen Leo since then. This last album is as if he took youth discovery pills or something. The creative energy is something you very seldom hear on albums by musicians over 24 or 25 years old. Man, I am Diggin' it. Thank god he doesn't sing on it. He really can sound like geese farts on a muggy day.

I've been rescuing records from landfill sites for a little while now. That only means I go to thrift stores and yard sales and buy interesting records to keep them from being destroyed. This past week I bought an 8-track tape by a guy named Gene Tracy that features a live report on a farting contest. You can see how I'm really into the cultural "Stuff".

Anyway, besides that, I bought a few more records. Two by Mahalia Jackson to add to the others I have; one by General Motors titled," Chevrolet Sings of Safe Driving and You". The record contains such memorable tunes as," An Exciting Thing (Driving a car); Grown-up Baby (Driving psychology)and many others.

Another album I rescued was "TWANG" A Country Song by Duane Eddy and an album, by Nina and Fredrik.

However, best of all was a record that features a reading of the book by D.H. Lawrence, "LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER". It's on the CAEDMON label # TC1116 (1959) and the reader is PAMELA BROWN !!
Yeah! That's what I thought too. Imagine, Pamela brown ! Remember the opening line in the song...I'm the guy who didn't marry pretty Pamela Brown??

I wonder what the "real" king (Kottke)of the twelve string would think about that?

You obviously put a lot of effort into this web site, and it provides a lot of good information. I've been trying to let Leo know that an old friend and fan of his, Turley Richards, has finally gotten a web site (www.turleyrichards.com) prior to releasing a double cd of his music. Contact Turley at turrich@bellsouth.net. If you can pass it on I'd appreciate it. What's the possibility that their paths could cross again?

I fell in love with Leo Kottke's music when I heard "Greenhouse." I got to see him in concert July 1998, and he was wonderful. He will be back in town in about a week! I hope he sings "Tiny Island"; it is my favorite song.

In the process of moving from to one coast to the other and back again, my plans to catch Leo Kottke perform at Humphrey's By the Bay in San Diego on July 18th fizzled. The words "SOLD OUT" hit me like a brick when I attempted to order 2 tickets, too late. I never had trouble ordering Kottke tickets before. To sell out a venue is a feather in Leo's cap (but he doesn't even wear a cap, does he?)and I am happy for him. But I am blown away and sadly disappointed, to say the least.

My request: If anyone out there has 2tx they can help me with, I'd be willing to give you the shirt off my back (that's all) and the $$ needed to cover cost.

Missing the concert is not the end of the world...and the sun will still come up in the morning...but to miss this opportunity to see the MAN perform live is worse that missing your Wheaties for breakfast.

In other words, if anyone out there has a few extra tx for the July 18th gig that you may not be needing, please e-mail me. Many thanx.

I heard Circle Round The Sun, first. I think some time in 1973. I proceeded to go out and find everything else I could. Leo's music changed me forever, as it has the lives of all those who have had to bear the hours of my repetitive exploration of open tuning.

i am more commonly known as brian robinson's mother -- several of you may know him as a young leo fan, a player of leo's music, a tab pig, whatever --- anyway, his dad and i also are fans of leo ---- and i have a question --- we would love to somehow contact him and offer him a sum of money to come to our home -- we'd be willing to give him a substantial amount -- but don't know how to contact him or an agent --- any ideas out there? we'd love to do this for our son's graduation gift (plus we would reap the benefit) -- it might be too high of a price for us, but would like to check it out anyway. have you ever heard of him doing anything private like this before? i'd appreciate any comments --- thanks, carolyn robinson

I have known Leo Kottke's music since 1974 when in France I first listened to his early-times "My feet are smiling" record. Since, even if this record became lost (or stollen), I never stopped listening to and enjoying tapes and now CD of this always evolving music.
We had our French folk guitar picker with late Marcel Dadi but he's now gone.
When is Leo coming to France: for fun, good food & wines, concert or better all together? Let me know, we'll pave the way!

Been a fan of Kottke's since 1972 after hearing 6 & 12 at a friends
party. The girl I was after left with another guy 'cause I was lost in
the music, he drove a beat up Ford pick-up. I never saw her again until 1990 when I was opening up for Kottke in 1990at Raoul's in Portland ME. She sat at a table almost directly in front of me, she was fat and toothless. I laughed and missed a phrase in the tune I was playing.....a good time was had by all.

I have just got into Leo Kottke music after hearing his music in a Troma film called - "Fat Guy Goes Nutzoid".. Does anybody know whether this the soundtrack was ever released or if music from the film is on other recordings? Also, as I live in London, UK and am not likely to travel to the US in the near future, I would like to know if Leo plans to do any tours here... I would love to see him live.. I have bourght a few records in the past few months - including "Did you hear me", which is absolutely amazing.. "Morning is a long way home" is definately my favourite track.

His concert on Saturday was the best concert of his I've ever been to. Thanks for this wonderful site. I've been a Kottke fan since time immemorial. I've been playing some of Leo's tunes for 20 years I guess - when was his first album, anyway? Whenever that came out. I've been playing guitar for 30+ years now and it amazes me how every few years, I keep coming back to playing Leo's tunes.

Anyway, I hope to be able to contribute tab to this site. I'm currently banging my head trying to figure out a decent 6-string arrangement of "Dead End" which is my current favorite (it just kicks butt!). If anyone out there has some advice, I'm all ears.

Thanks, Leo, for the wonderful music. Is it true you're an alien? That's the only explanation....

Besides being an enthusiastic Kottke fan, I am a professional dancer (flamenco, ballet, modern, etc.) and choreographer, as well as a fitness trainer and yoga instructor. Leo's music is an audio transcript of where I am trying to go when I choreograph a new piece. Yet, attempting to fully comprehend either his brilliant guitar work or his mind-staggering stage presence is an elusive quest, dished out only in the increments my feeble brain is capable of receiving. But it is a most enjoyable process!

I have listened to Kottke for a while now and continue to hurt my brain trying to play like him. I hope to see a lot of folks filling the halls on his latest swing through New England.

Michael....re your post of Jan 26:

The "Easter" string bend is done behind the nut. Hit the harmonics
(Open G) and bend only the B string down *behind* the nut. You
can move it up and down for that warble effect.

Re Kottke's 1st album.....actual name is "12 String Blues"
(which was recorded at the Scholar). Not that many left
as far as I know. Have been offered $200.00 for mine. It's
basically the same tunes as the "Circle 'Round the Sun album,
but live.

Hope this helps.

Hi again,

I just read Jonathan's comment on Standing In My Shoes, and I disagree with his comment on Leo's sound. His Taylor sounds as good as ever.

I wonder what you guys think of Leo's latest record, Standing In My Shoes. I think it's far from his abilities and that David Z. (of Prince's The Revolution fame) is not really the obvious choice for producing Leo's music.
I do love Leo's other records though. And this website is truly great! Keep up the good work, Bruce!

To Jonathon Klass: in response to your question, 'What do you all think?': -------
Dear Jonathon: The 'story' of your dilemma regarding your wife's gift of Standing In My Shoes would have been fine had it been communicated to an acquaintance, printed on the 'Reviews' page of The Daily Blah, or told to Leo 'one on one'.
However, should you read somewhat from the few hundred other letters to this guestbook, you cannot fail to notice that this is NOT the 'COMPLAINT COUNTER'. Here is a suggestion: the next time you get the urge to 'share' in a similar vein, don't. Otherwise, welcome----and kindly overlook the proprietary arrogance.

After being a rabid fan for 25 years I finally got to see/hear Leo in concert last week in Washington, DC. It was worth the wait.

Enjoyed Leo's terrific concert at the Baird Auditorium (Natural History Museum) in Washington, D.C., last week. Voice, fingers and wit all in fine form. He also performed two songs I hadn't heard: one called "Snorkel." (Found out about the concert on this site -- thanks, Bruce. There was very little local advertising for the concert.) Said Leo about the venue: "When I heard where I'd be playing I wondered, as many of you probably did, whether I'd be part of a diorama: American Guitarist circa 1998."

To respond to Jonathan Klass's views on Standing in My Shoes: I sure disagree. True, there was a lot more bass and a "techno pop" feel to the disc, but I think the current version of the title song is much better than others he has recorded. (Though I have been trying to make sense of those lyrics for a while without success.) I like both versions of "Vaseline Machine Gun." And his cover of "Corrina, Corrina" is beautiful.

I can't wait for his next one! (BTW: Anyone know if "Accordion Bells" was recorded? Heard it performed in past concerts but can't find it anywhere, and Leo's label has been most unhelpful.)

Hi All !,
I recieved A copy of Leo's recent cd "Standing In My Shoes" as a birthday present from my wife, and I do not know how to tell her that I am disappointed by it. It is lack lustre and unexciting. The version of Staning in my shoes is terrible with the vocal being drowned out by the backing. Vaseline machine gun has been slowed down to a snail's pace and the tone of the 12-string is buzzy and he certainly does not seem to be getting the sound from it he used to. I am of the opinion that the Taylor he uses now does not have the sound of the previous guitars such as the Bozo and the Gibson B45's. Also I liked his work with fingerpicks better than his technique now. I think he is too controlled and the high-tech drum beat on one of the tracks does not match the music at all.Chet Atkin's solo on TWICE makes Leo's music uninspired lift music.
What do you all think??

The show was an awsome first time experience. We had our son Miles(6 mo.) in the front row for the first half of the show. Judging by his smile he loved it. He fell asleep during intermisson. He slept until Leo walked out and the shower of hands fell on his ears. I had to listen to the second half of the show out in the hall. (Maybe we shouldn't have brought him) He woke up just in time to go up after the show and get his ticket signed. My wife wants to know if there is any "LEO" paraphanalia she can get to put in his time capsule along with his ticket and CD. Last of all, what is the song with the lyrics "ring ring ring let the doorbell ring ... let the phone ring ... let the wedding bells ring?

Miles was only 6 mo. old, but he still made it to a front row seat in Sioux Falls, SD. He's still got "Pamela Brown" etched in his ears.
What was the story behind the can of chunky beef soup put on the stage in front of Leo's chair before the show began?

A VIGNETTE:

Leo peers up into the lights, hand over eyes, trying to see up to the second balcony of the newly-restored Southern Theatre here in Columbus, Ohio.

"Is there anyone up there?" he asks.

The second balcony responds and applauds.

"Good. Because it'd be terrible to, like ... you know, to connect with the balcony and then find out later that it wasn't there."

Leo appeared here last night, with Maura O'Connell opening. This was the premiere concert at the newly-restored Southern Theatre, which was built in 1896 but which has been closed for 20 years, and reopened to the public just this past weekend. It was a real treat to see Leo perform -- I've been listening to him (in awe) for 25 years. Excellent concert! And we enjoyed his offbeat humor as well. Thanks, Leo!

Message to Theo:

Video clips are coming...but I guess it hasn't been "soon" has it? That message has been there for about 8 months now. Here come the excuses as to why I haven't been able to get more video clips up: (1) I need a big new hard drive to store digitized video and instead I bought a really expensive guitar in the spring (2) I've been working two jobs for the past 8 months and haven't had the time. On a positive note, a fellow in the U.K. has just finished digitizing a pile of Leo Kottke clips and is sending them to me...hopefully, I'll be able to get them on the site in October.

Anyway, good things come to he (and she) who waits...

Also, I *may* eventually stick complete tracks of Leo's out-of-print records on the web site. I'm hesitant to do it though because of copyright.

Bruce

The word "fan" seems to trivialize what Leo and his art mean to me. But I have been one since I first heard him in college in 1975. I even got to talk to him at The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI, the site of some of the finest Leo shows I have ever witnessed. Thanks to Bruce for this site and to Leo for bringing such joy to my ears over the years.

I have never read such an eloquent description of Kottke as one of our posters here described (Steve Rodgers) back in July of this year: "Would that my voice sounded like goose farts on a muggy day.....and that my fingers were so nimble, and that my brain/body/guitar composed such masterpieces." I thought that bore repeating, Steve. What a great way to honor Leo...:-)

Well, I caught Leo's act in San Juan Capistrano last night. Performing with a healing broken foot cannot be pleasurable for him, but what show he gave us! He made light of his foot and focused more on explaining his self-designed"Kottke-Taylor" acoustic guitars, providing more details and info in a delivery only Kottke can pull off with such hilarious color...:-)

And the music.....well..he played many of his classics, "Pamela Brown", "Louise", "Room at the Top of the Stairs".....I will always love his version of "Corinna, Corinna".......Leo played lots of instrumental melodies mixed together (as he's known to do)....the crowd at the Coach House was warm and receptive. Much laughter, knee-slapping and finger-tapping could be heard all around me. Leo came back for one encore and delighted us with "Little Martha" and more instrumentals.....

He played for a good hour and 35 minutes. His spirits seem good , his voice was great..and he played as brilliantly as ever. He pulled it off very well, considering he was probably in some pain thoughout the whole performance due to that foot! You'd never know it...he didn't miss a beat!

It was a great evening for all and I look forward to the next "Kottke Experience".

Magic, that's how he does it. Leo's music has had a strong impact in my life. Although I don't play the guitar, it moves me like no other instrument.
